Speller Keyboard User Manual
In the Box
- Speller Keyboard
- USB Type C cable (for wired usage and charging)
- USB Type C to A adapter (for connecting to host devices without a USB C port)
- Spare Blank Keycaps (x4)
Hand Strap
The strap is velcro so you can adjust it to fit your hand comfortably. It can also rotate around to different angles, and has a kickstand which you can use to prop up the keyboard.
Connect
- Wired
- Wireless
Just plug the USB cable into your Speller Keyboard and the device you want to use it with (computer, iPad, phone, etc.).

Troubleshooting
macOS Connected but Not Working
If you attempt to pair your Speller Keyboard from macOS in a way that causes a bonding issue, macOS may report the keyboard as connected but fail to actually work:
- In System Settings → Bluetooth, find Speller and click Remove or Forget.
- On the keyboard, ensure the profile tied to that Mac is active (press BT, then A–E), then press the Cyboard logo (BT_CLR) once to clear the bond.
- Retry pairing from macOS as described above.
Windows Connected but Not Working
If Windows indicates the keyboard is connected but it doesn’t send keystrokes:
- In Settings → Bluetooth & devices, remove Speller.
- Activate the correct profile on the keyboard (via BT → A–E) and press the Cyboard logo (BT_CLR) once to clear that pairing.
- Toggle Bluetooth off/on in Windows Settings, then pair Speller again.
- If it still won’t type:
- Restart your PC.
- Open Device Manager, enable Show hidden devices (View menu), expand Bluetooth, and uninstall any Speller entries.
- If prompted, complete passkey entry using the number‑layer method above.
The Speller Keyboard requires Bluetooth 4.2 or newer on your host device. On iPads, this means 5th generation (2017) or later.
Default Layout
This is what the keys do on your Speller Keyboard by default:
Troubleshooting Layout
Keyboard Only Sending Numbers
If your Speller Keyboard is only sending numbers, it is probably stuck in the factory testing mode. To exit this mode, you must unplug and turn off the keyboard, then turn it back on.
Lighting Control
While you are in the keyboard settings layer (press BT to toggle this layer), keys towards the bottom of the keyboard will allow you to control the backlighting. Here are descriptions of what each button does:
- RGB TOG: Toggle the backlighting on and off
- RGB HUI: Change the color (going around the color-wheel)
- RGB HUD: Change the color (going the other way around the color-wheel)
- RGB SAI: Increase the color saturation, making the color a deeper shade.
- RGB SAD: Decrease the color saturation, making the color a lighter shade (closer to white).
- RGB BRI: Increase the brightness of the lights.
- RGB BRD: Decrease the brightness of the lights.
- RGB SPI: Increase the speed of the built-in animation effect.
- RGB SPD: Decrease the speed of the built-in animation effect.
- RGB EFF: Change the animation effect (cycle forward).
- RGB EFR: Change the animation effect (cycle backward).
Making Changes to the Layout
Use ZMK Studio
- Plug in your Speller Keyboard with USB
- Navigate to zmk.studio on the host device.
- When prompted to unlock the keyboard, press the unlock key (Cyboard Logo key by default)
- Make changes, which are instantly applied.
Change the Keycaps
- Unscrew the 4 screws on the back of the keyboard
- Pull the top half of the case off.
- Pull the keycaps off that you want to rearrange/replace, and press the new ones into place.
Update Speller Keyboard
To update your keyboard's firmware:
- Plug the Speller Keyboard in to a computer (laptop or desktop, not phone or tablet) via USB.
- Double-tap the reset button next to the usb port with something thin like a pen. The power switch should light up and pulse blue (it may still be red as well if it is also charging). You should see a USB drive appear on your computer called
ASSIMILATOR. - Download the latest firmware by clicking this button:
- Copy the downloaded file to the
ASSIMILATORdrive that appears on your computer.ASSIMILATORshould then eject itself. There may be an error message that pops up on some computers, but it most likely still worked. - Wait for the keyboard to restart - it will automatically reboot with the new firmware. Once the power switch is no longer blue, it is safe to unplug the keyboard.
