Cyboard Studio Firmware Update

Cyboard Studio lets you edit your keymap and configure your trackballs point-and-click, right from the browser — no config repo or firmware build needed. (It's built on the open-source ZMK Studio project.) To use it, your wireless Imprint needs Cyboard's Studio firmware.

You need this update if:

  • Studio shows a "Your keyboard needs a firmware update" message when you try to connect, or
  • Studio connects but shows "Firmware update available" (your firmware supports Studio, but not Cyboard's trackball configuration), or
  • Your keyboard shipped before the Studio firmware rollout.

This applies to wireless Imprints. Wired Cyboards use Vial instead — see the vial-qmk releases.

1. Download the firmware​

You need one firmware file per half. The buttons below always fetch the newest release:

2. Flash each half​

Repeat these steps for each half, one at a time:

  1. Connect the half to your computer with a USB-C cable (use the port closest to you; data cable required, not charge-only).
  2. Put it in bootloader mode by double-tapping the reset button next to the USB-C port. The switch puller that comes with your Cyboard fits in the reset hole!
  3. A USB drive named ASSIMILATOR appears on your computer.
  4. Drag the matching .uf2 file onto that drive — left file to the left half, right file to the right half.
  5. The drive disappears and the keyboard restarts on its own. Done!

Flashing the wrong half's file won't damage anything, but the keyboard won't work correctly — if you mix them up, just flash again with the right file.

3. Verify in Studio​

  1. Plug the left half into your computer over USB.
  2. Open studio.cyboard.digital in Chrome or Edge and click Connect.
  3. When asked to unlock, press and hold the A and F keys together for about 3 seconds, until the unlock message disappears. (This works even if you've remapped those keys — the keyboard watches the physical key positions.)
  4. You should see your keymap — and the trackball configuration page.

Troubleshooting​

  • No ASSIMILATOR drive appears — try a different USB cable (it must be a data cable) or port, and make sure you double-tap the reset button quickly.
  • Studio still shows the update message — confirm you flashed the left half with imprint_left-studio.uf2 and that the left half is the one connected over USB.
  • Keymap looks different after the update — the update ships the standard Imprint layout. Reapply your customizations in Studio; they're saved on the keyboard from then on.
